Fri, Apr 18, 2003 - From Alan Young
Hi Gang,
Sorry to announce the passing of classmate, Terry Hall. He passed away in
Arizona from a rare form of cancer. This was passed on to me by Neal Otani
and Kevin Chong Kee. Also heard about the passing of George De Ramos's father. We send our condolences and prayers to their families and wish them
much comfort in this time of grief.
I hope this finds all of you healthy and safe in these uncertain and trying
times. Take care and enjoy your 50th birthdays and be happy we are able to
have one.
Aloha,

Hi Guys,
Just a short note to wish all of you and your families a very Merry
Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year. As we approach the Big "5" "0"
which hopefully is only the half way mark for all of us. I would like to
thank all of you for your friendship and experiences that we have shared. I
would like to say that no matter what the situations in the world are at the
moment, the memories of good times that you had with your friends is
something that can always put a smile on your face. With that note, take
care of yourselves and hopefully we'll see all of you at the next reunion.

Being one of the oldest in the class, I've already celebrated the big 50.
As for slowing me down, well don't worry guys its okay. You'll still wake
up and your wife will still give you a bad time. Maybe a little different
than before, but nothing changes except you're just a little slower.
As for me heading toward the classroom everyday, kids get the since they can
take the old man, but wisdom and age seems to keep everyone in check. Thank
God.
The weather here is not like home. We're at 39 degrees as I write, but hit
a high of 45 degrees during the day, it will give me a chance to golf this
weekend.
I'd like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Maybe
I'll get a chance to join all of you in the next reunion. I told you
baseball would be my life.

-----------
Recipie Compliments of Rod Chang!
Holiday Fruitcake
Ingredients:
1 cup of water
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup of sugar
1 tsp salt
1cup of brown sugar
lemon juice
4 large eggs
nuts
1 bottle Jose Cuervo
2 cups of dried fruit
Sample the Cuervo to check quality.
Take a large bowl, check the Cuervo again to be sure it is of the highest
quality. Pour one level cup and drink.
Repeat.
Turn on the electric mixer.
Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl.
Add one teaspoon of sugar. Beat again.
At this point it's best to make sure the Cuervo is still OK.
Try another cup .... just in case, turn off the mixerer thingy.
Break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.
Pick the frigging fruit off floor.
Mix on the turner.
If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers just pry it loose with a
drewscriver.
Sample the Cuervo to check for tonsisticity.
Next, sift two cups of salt. Or something. Who giveshz a $hit.
Check the Jose Cuervo
Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts.
Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefing. Whatever you can find.
Greash the oven. Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over.
Don't forget to beat off the turner.
Finally, throw the bowl through the window, finish the Jose Cuervo and kick
the cat.
CHERRY MISTMAS!
----------------
Sat, Dec 21, 2002 - From Richard Lum
Ok,
I tried the recipe. I got as far as:
"Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl."
It turns out (according to the police report) that I thought it read:
"Beat Fluffy (our dog) with a large butter bowl." (Dyslexia caused by Cuervo
consumption). If you were paying attention in Brother Wesley's Latin class,
this is known as "dudeiumthatsioreallyostupidium".
At this point "Fluffy" took exception and bit my leg.
I fell into the preheated oven, belched, and the fumes caused by the Cuervo
testing exploded. This took out the adjoining family room windows.
Where do I send the bill?
In a related, but separate subject, does anybody do pro bono work?
Regards,
Richard

Mon, Dec 23, 2002 - From Manny Sylvester
All,
It's great to see all of the season's greetings mixed in with my
work email. As each one comes in I look at the 'from' address and try to
picture the classmate who sent it. Of course my mental pictures are likely
to be a little different than reality after all these years ;-), but it's
great fun.
Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2003!
aloha from Kauai,
-Manny Sylvester
P.S.
I hope not everyone has received the list below in the past few days
- I've seen parts of it before but parts are new:
12 Rules for Life!!
1. Never give yourself a haircut after three margaritas.
2. You need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it
should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.
3. The five most essential words for a healthy, vital relationship are: "I
apologize" and "you are right."
4. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
5. Never pass up an opportunity to pee.
6. If he/she says that you are too good for him/her - believe them.
7. Learn to pick your battles; ask yourself, "Will this matter one year from
now? How about one month? One week? One day?"
8.When you make a mistake, make amends IMMEDIATELY! It's easier to eat crow
while it's still warm.
9. If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You have another chance!
10. Living well really is the best revenge. Being miserable because of a bad
or former relationship just might mean that the other person was right about
you.
11. Work is good, but it's not that important. Money is nice, but you can't
take it with you. Statistics show most people don't live to spend all they
saved; some die even before they retire. Anything we have isn't really ours;
it was given to us by God; He just lets us borrow it while we're here...even
our kids.
12. And finally...Be really good to your family and/or friends. You never
know when you are going to need them to empty your bedpan.
"God grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the
good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the
difference."

Hi Guys,
David Lee the secretary for the Alumni Association asked me to let you know about the SLH Alumni Association nominations meeting on the 16th of April, 2002 and the elections meeting on June 5, 2002. Dinner and beverages will be served at the clubhouse after the meetings at 6:00 pm on both dates.
Classmate Jim Pitchford who missed the reunion in Vegas because of his sister's tragedy on 9/11 is going to be visiting the islands June 20 - 28. He has asked if any of the classmates would like to get together while he is here to golf and talk story. Give me some feedback if you are interested or if you are on the mainland or outer island and are also going to be in town the same time.
The outer island golf and relaxation get together is still in the working. Terry Yasuhara and Will Tanaka have offered to help if things can be worked
out and there is enough interest.
Thanks and Take Care.

Things have been pretty calm these pass few weeks--a welcomed time to relax.
Have been asked by some of your classmates to see if anyone is interested in
maybe an outer island weekend of golf and relaxation this spring. If anyone
is interested please contact me via e-mail and give me a good weekend for
you. If anyone can help with planning give me a note also. Nothing is firm
yet, this is just a survey if there is any interest.

On another note the Saint Louis Alumni Association is trying to get in
contact with Kaipo Spencer. Has anyone seen him lately or has his phone number please send me a note.

Sun, January 6, 2002 - Update from Korea [Redacted where appropriate]
Hey Goose:
I'm doing fine...Been busy on this side of the world because of the operations going on. We're not involved as much as when we initially started...We've had a curfew in effect since 9/11, so its a bummer not being able to stay out late in Seoul...Things have loosened up, but...[the] current situation...will probably be the norm for a long time since this operation will be a protracted operation worldwide.
Anyway, the past few months been busy trying to get into my mid-tour leave and work off some long needed leave time. In late October...I took [a few] days. [Family member] came to Korea...and we went to China...Visited Peking (Beijing), Xian, Guilin, and Shanghai. Loved the trip--lots of interesting historical sites and information. Bought an "Erhu" (ancient chinese two string instrument) for my dad in the streets of Guilin. Then, went home...for a couple of weeks to fix stuff around the house. Returned to Korea and a couple weeks later went to Thailand with a couple of friends. Most of the time was spent shopping for watches, software, and clothes--the usual stuff guys shop for. Spent a day in chinatown and got some real nice chinese clothes for a decent price. It was interesting traffic...crazy like Beijing. The taxis are motorcyles that weave in-out of traffic with passengers side-saddled on the back. The other form of taxi is the "tuk-tuk," little two passenger three wheel carts that run on propane. The passengers sit on the bench above the propane tanks. Sounds to me like riding a bomb about to happen!!
The December holidays were welcome, and getting a couple of days off was good...for me. [Family member] came over...and we went to one of the Korean orphanages to spend Xmas. One of my officers has sponsored the orphanage for the past 5 years and a group usually goes down to deliver gifts and presents to the kids (around 80) ranging from babies to 17/18 year olds. Some of the kids had such sad stories, but the orphanage does a good job of taking care of the kids.
This new year will be very busy with me moving...back [home]. I'll have [a few] more years until I hit...retirement and it will probably be a big turning point for me mentally. Hard to leave a place where you want to stay, but can't stay. Even though the "system" and some people give me headaches sometimes, its the people and experience that really make this Army a great place to be. I guess it's always been the people because I've beeen in some real ratty places, but the people are what makes its all worthwhile.
The more I think about Korea and its culture and people, the more I wish I got here sooner in my career to learn more about the place. Such a rich culture and full of history. I made a comment to somebody the other day--even though I'm not Korean, the asian population and history here is as close to "my people" as I've ever been in my life. Korea is a great jumping off point to visit the asian countries. Sometime in the future, I'm planning a trip to Ulaanbatuur, the capital of Mongolia. Don't know what's there, but it could be a great experience and adventure...With the population learning english, it should be interesting to visit. Although I hesitate to drink fresh mare's milk and chew on sheep's eyeballs, I think I can handle it if they had western restaurants.
Will keep you posted.

Tue, January 1, 2002 - A Belated Merry Christmas and a Great New Year!
Hi Folks,
I would like to wish all of you and your families a belated Merry Christmas
and a Happy, Safe and Healthy New Year. Sorry this is so late but I have
been going crazy at my store with all the holiday orders.
With that aside, I would like to say how great it was to see and be able to
talk to all of you during the reunion events and get togethers. It was a lot
of work getting it all planned but we sure had a lot of fun doing it. I
don't know if it's because we are getting older but it sure was nice to able
to bond with old friends and spend some time making new ones. It sort of
puts your priorities of life, family and friends into the forefront
especially with the events of 9/11.
Many thanks again to all the guys and gals that helped throughout the year.
Take care of yourself and keep in touch.
